Installation Guide of Visual Modeler 4.1
Visual Modeler 4.1 is a Java application and runs on all major platforms including Microsoft Windows (98, 2000, XP and Vista), various flavors of Linux and Unix, and MacOS X. It requires Java 2 Runtime Environment (J2RE) from Sun Microsystems. For Microsoft Windows, Linux, and Unix platforms, Java 1.6 or higher is required. For MacOS 10.4 and 10.5, Java 1.5 or higher is required. It is highly recommended to run Visual Modeler 4.1 with the latest release of Java.
Visual Modeler 4.1 is distributed in the following formats:
- Microsoft Windows executable installer ( .exe, Microsoft Windows)
- JAR executable installer ( .jar, Microsoft Windows)
- MacOS X disk image with installer ( .dmg, MacOS X)
- JAR executable installer for MacOS X ( .jar, MacOS X)
- JAR executable installer for Linux ( .jar, 32-bit and 64-bit Linux)
- ZIP compressed archive format ( .zip, all platforms)
- JAR compressed archive format ( .jar, all platforms)
- Gzipped-tar compressed archive format ( .tar.gz, all platforms)
Installation with Microsoft Windows Executable Installer
- Download the Microsoft Windows executable installer (.exe) file and save it to your local disk.
- Double click on the executable installer file to launch the installer.
- Follow the instruction and proceed with installation.
Installation with MacOS X Disk Image
- Download the MacOS X disk image with installer (.dmg) file and save it to your local disk.
- Double click on the disk image file, a new removable disk is mounted.
- Locate the removable disk in your Finder window, you should find a single installer file on the removable disk.
- Double click on the installer file to launch the installer.
- Follow the instruction and proceed with installation.
- Unmount the removable disk when the installation is completed.
Special Notes for MacOS Users
Visual Modeler for MacOS requires MacOS 10.4 and J2SE 1.5 or higher. You must set J2SE 1.5 as your first option for running Java applications. You should install the J2SE 1.5 update to MacOS 10.4 if you have not done so.- Launch the "Java Preferences" application under Applications/Utilities/Java
- Select the "General" tab.
- Under the "Java Application Runtime Settings" dialog (located in the lower portion of the window), you should see a list of J2SE options, which includes "J2SE 1.4.2" and "J2SE 1.5"
- Make sure the "J2SE 1.5" option is above the "J2SE 1.4.2" option. If not, you can drag the "J2SE 1.5" option to the top of the list.
Installation with Jar Installer
You should install the J2SE/J2RE 1.6 before installing Visual Modeler.- Download the cross-platform Jar installer (.jar) file and save it to your local disk.
- Double click on the Jar installer file to launch the installer.
The Jar installer can also be launched by executing the following command at the command prompt.
java -jar <jar-installer file>
- Follow the instruction and proceed with installation.
Installation with Zip/Gzip Archives
- Download the zip/gzip archive file and save it to your local disk.
- Unpack the archive file directly to the installation directory.
